‘Take a whack at it!’
They said that and smiled (in a way that would put Devil to shame!). It was a challenge being thrown at us, while we were ideating for the May issue. May heralds Summer and that means being thrown amongst what are known as – ‘Dog Days’!
Yes, the scorching, sweltering, suffocating days of oppressive heat that send you gasping – that’s what ‘Dog Days’ are all about! Each year, whenever this season comes, you just stand numbed into resignation and surrender with the last strand of zing or zest crushed out of your system!
But why o’ why?
Come on, it’s only a weather, people! You cannot let yourself be browbeaten by it! Trust us, far more than Heat, there are ways to Beat the Heat!
But screeeeech! The instant we said that, we were caught in a clutch by everybody here and they threw a gauntlet our way to prove our premise by putting together a Summer issue that would be cool as cucumber!
And what is GR8! Gang if not foolhardy? We picked up the gauntlet and went into a huddle. Lots of gnashing the teeth, getting each other’s goat and ‘G r r r’ & ‘Groans’ followed – but to no avail!
While the bedlam was continuing – somebody hummed! Everybody looked askance upon the guy who could hum in all that tense ruckus around – but the culprit just grinned and went on with his humming – and then something struck!
Suddenly, we got seized of the song he was humming. It was the Alternate Rock group Pavement’s 1992 number – ‘Summer Babe’!
And that rang a bell – nay, a siren!
Short of jumping with a ‘Eureka’ cry, we were beside ourselves with joy! That’s it! That’s just It! ‘Summer Babe’ – what can be cooler than that!? Let’s have a go at a feature on Summer Babe… er, Babes actually!
Work started right away and on a war footing as well, since already much time had been lost in those eternal brain-storming sessions. Stacks of photographs were rummaged through to ferret out TV’s Summer Babes. List… counter list… counter, counter list sprang up to be harvested to the optimum in bringing out the feature.
After much ‘to-do’, the shortlisting came to the final stage! But still, there was a quandary hanging like a sword on everybody’s head – who to feature on the cover?
It had to be someone fresh as daisy and cool as dew!
That meant someone from the Gen-next of the TVland! And once that was decided, the next step was surprisingly quick. There was hardly any dilly-dallying in putting the finger on the choice for the cover – they (yes, not one, not two, it’s a threesome) were garden-fresh, crisp and candid. There was nothing fake about them and their joie-de-vivre was infectious!
They were the Mohan sisters!
The trio is the tomorrow of TV, what with having achieved in the beginning of their career that is well & truly the envy of the veterans!
Neeti (Mohan), Shakti (Mohan) and Mukti (Mohan) are a trio of siblings that has unleashed itself on the world of Entertainment with their multi-hued escapades and achievements! Today, they are hailed as the harbinger of Gen-next on the Indian screens.
