Content Regulation on Television
A seminar organised by The Indian Television Academy (The ITA) on 31st of August 2010 at India International Centre N. Delhi to discuss “The regulation of content on General entertainment and News channels.” The Hon Min of I & B Ms. Ambika Soni was the Chairperson of the seminar which had a huge attendance of the top bosses of News and GEC channels, besides content heads, producers and noted journalists. Even the two top political leaders like Shri Sharad Yadav President JDU and Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad ex I&B Minister and Spokesperson of BJP participated in a two hour plus long session. Shri Sharad Yadav in his earthy humour told news channel editors about the trivia shown most of the time in the name of news. In the inimitable style he said, ‘Dhoni ki shaadi main jodi se toh interview hua nahi ghodi or ghodiwale ka interview dikhate rahe.’ He also came down heavily on channels obsessed by the likes of Rahul Mahajan and Rakhi Sawant who make terrible role models for the youth. Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned the validity of mere 8000 samples in a nation of 100 million people. He said an independent body to monitor TRP is a must. Even the irresponsible print media selling news space for money was severely criticised.
